Ars Technica's Wireless optical desktop and Bluetooth mouse review
Ars Technica has posted a Wireless optical desktop and Bluetooth mouse review. I know that Logitech's MX3100/LX700 get fave reviews but if your a Mac user, think about it twice: Logitech offers no support or drivers for their products and they warn there is no plans to develop drivers for the Mac, either. So you cannot use the supplied MouseWare software if you use a non-Windoze OS. You could probably use the built-in drivers supplied in Mac OS X but to which extent can you use the full functionality of these devices?
I bought myself a Logitech MX1000 when the mouse had just come out and in the package was included a driver for Mac OS X on CD. I had major problems with the mouse (I had never seen a mouse behave so erratically in my life, I swear to god!!! The cursor kept skipping all over the screen, it was completely crazy) and I took it back for an exchange of the same model. The new MX1000 mouse I got in exchange did not have the Mac OS X CD anymore in the kit and the package did not include the Mac OS X logo on the box either. I asked the salesman if I could keep the CD so I could reinstall the driver if need be and it was ok with him.
The mouse is better than the first one I had, there is no doubt (at least contrary to the first one it is usable), but it is still a bit touchy to use it in Photoshop for instance. It still jumps about one pixel or two to the side once in a while so not too reliable.
Anyway if you are a Mac user and looking for an alternative to Apple's Pro mouse I would definitely look elsewhere on this one. A company that does not support the Mac is not an alternative to me. And even if I could make it partially work, why should I pay for Windoze-only development and pay the same full price when my platform is considered as non-existent?
